Anonymous Comments Are Turned Off

Apparently some kind of comment-spamming software out there decided to mark several of our URLs for spam. I've been manually deleting them over the past several weeks, but it has increased in frequency.

So, as of now only persons who have registered with Blogger can comment. For the time being anyways.

Sorry.

Blog Template Changes

I did some major revisions of the blog template on JFB.

Previously, the entire template was in an HTML table. I've now removed the table, and used CSS to layout the columns.

I had to do this because it was loading very slowly in Internet Explorer. When you visited the blog, you'd get the wallpaper right away, and then about 20 seconds later the page would finally display. This happened because the way IE renders tables. It has to load everything in first, before it can display a table. It so happened that the ads and eBay listings often took several seconds to load in.

The reason why I used an HTML table in the first place is to ensure greater consistency from one browser to another. You can't go wrong using simple HTML. But with CSS, each browser renders things slightly differently. You'll notice that in this new template some things are missing, like the wallpaper, the Google Link Units on the Item Pages, and the JFB header image is no longer hyperlinked back to the home page. This is because of CSS inconsistencies between IE and Firefox. Actually, IE seemed to render most things well, with Firefox screwing up a lot of stuff. In order to fix the Firefox issues, it would have screwed up IE.

I can get the missing items back in, it'll just take more time. I'm not a proficient programmer.

But hopefully now, you can get your junk food fix more quickly.

What's the Definition of Junk Food?

After running across the Junk Food definition in Wikipedia, I felt compelled to write up my own thoughts of what constitutes "junk food".

In short, junk food is any kind of food not intended to be part of a balanced nutrition. It doesn't have to be "bad" for you, it just has to be something created mostly for satisfaction than nutrition.

Wikipedia says the following...

Junk food is a common term used for any food item that is perceived to be unhealthy and has low or poor nutritional value.

I could accept the notion that most food perceived to be unhealthy or of low nutritional value to be junk food. However, consider celery. It's mostly water, and is actually low in nutritional value. But we wouldn't consider celery to be junk food.

On the opposite end, consider unseasoned, unsalted, rice cakes. There's nothing unhealthy about these things, in fact, they're pretty good eating as far as diet and health are concerned. But I feel they straddle the line on junk food. Rice cakes were made for snacking, or at best, a platform to smear jelly or cream cheese. They're more about satisfaction than nutrition.

You could also say the same thing about potatoes. By themselves, they don't offer much in terms of essential vitamins and minerals. And, no one eats potatoes plain, with nothing on them. We always pile on butter and sour cream. Other people sprinkle salt and pepper. We dab french fries into ketchup, and mix cheesy sauce with Au Gratin style. In that sense, they're not much different than rice cakes.

So, would we consider potatoes to be junk food? No. Potatoes by themselves were not created purely for satisfaction. On the other hand, processed potatoes, like french fries, hash browns, potato chips, are junk food. I'd have to exclude baked potatoes from junk food, because you gotta cook a potato somehow.

Pizzas are generally considered to be junk food. But what part of a pizza makes it junky? The bread? The cheese? The tomato sauce? The pepperoni? If you answer "The pepperoni", then what if we exchange it for mushrooms? Would that make it healthy? I'm not sure why pizza is more junkier than a plate of Chicken Parmesan over Linguini.

As for Junk Food Blog, what's the criteria for getting a product blogged here?

It's really up to me to decide, mostly based on what I feel is good. But here's a general set of criteria I look for...

1. It is "ready to eat" (straight out of the package).

2. It is not marketed as a health food.

3. It is consumed as a snack, not part of a meal.

4. It is manufactured.

I may stray off of these rules, if it's something I can't resist telling you about.

Back From The Road

If you've wondered where I've been the past couple of weeks, well, I've been riding my motorcycle.

From June 7 to June 11, me and a bunch of folks from our riding club headed up north from Southern California to the 29th Annual Redwood Run, what is often described as the last of the old school biker rallies.

And boy what a great time it was! Concerts, food, partying, boobies, beer, games, boobies, food, more concerts. Did I forget the boobies?

On June 11, my friends rode back home while I rode up north to Gold Beach, Oregon to hook up with two other friends for a tour across the Columbia River Gorge, including places in Spokane, Coeur D'Alene, as well as Crater Lake, the Sierra Nevadas, the Sequoias and Kings Canyon.

I didn't get back until late evening, June 18.

Click here to see my photos from the Redwood Run (beware of boobies!)

Click here to see my photos from the latter half of my road trip (no boobies here).

Do you ride a motorcycle in Southern California? Check out our riding club.

Now, on with the junk food!

Getting Back to Junk Food Blogging

The last time I took a break from blogging, I was in the hospital recovering from a motorcycle accident.

This last lapse was due to other reasons, a little more complicated.

The last few years, blogging and publishing websites has become my full time job. I operate my a home business under the name Clear Digital Media, Inc. It's an actual incorporated business, and I take it pretty seriously.

While Junk Food Blog has grown to become quite popular, it generates very little revenue for Clear Digital Media. Food blogging, or at least the style I write in, just doesn't attract a lot of clicks. JFB is largely a creative outlet for me; a way to poke fun at strange tasties, or to just put them on display and let other junk food junkies salivate.

I need to focus time on things that make money.

What I really need to do is hire some writers. We do have Kelli, who has blogged here on JFB before, but we're using her for other websites right now. That's why I've been working on our top earning websites, trying to raise revenues so that we can hire more writers.

But I'm also doing a disservice to all the faithful JFB readers, who I promised to deliver photos and reports of new "artery clogging filth" on a regular basis. Honestly, I'm feeling bad about letting you down.

So enough with the explanation, LET'S GET ON WITH THE CRAP!

Look, eating a strict diet of "whole natural foods" might let you live an extra 20 years, but that only means having to eat that crap for another 20 years. Don't punish yourself!

You know that guy Dr. Robert Atkins, the one who invented the Atkins Diet? He died at 72 years of age, no better than the average American! So WTF? You may as well enjoy life.

Bob's Big BoyDrop the turkey-breast sandwiches and tofu-berry shakes. Go get the Pringles, the Little Smokies, the Krispy-Kremes, the Ben & Jerry's! It's ok. Just tell yourself, it's ok. Bookmark Junk Food Blog, and do the American thing.
