Easy Open Sardines in a Can

Season Canned SardinesIt's been a long time since I've eaten sardines from a can, so I'm totally out of the loop of sardine can technology.

This new pull-tab design seems like a great way pull open a can without fussing with a key.

The new pull-tab can is available from the Season brand of sardines.

Chocolate Flavored Imitation Crab

Chocolate flavored surimiA Lithuanian food maker named Viciunai, has launched a new treat called, "Sweets del Mare - Chocolate Flavoured Surimi".

Surimi is just a general term used to describe a wide assortment of fish cake products, most popular of which is imitation crab.

Note that this is not chocolate covered, just chocolate flavored. I'm not sure I can imagine the taste of imitation crab with chocolate. The next time I order a salad buffet at Sizzler's, I'll have to get some imitation crab, and douse it with fudge from their dessert bar.

Sweets del Mar is not available in the USA, and probably for good reason. Lithuanians, and other folks who live around the Baltic Sea, however, must really love their seafood.

Viciunai doesn't yet have this product on their website.

Gorton's Potato Chip Fish Fillets

Gorton's Potato CrunchGorton's of Gloucester apparently has a new product out called, "Gorton's Potato Crunch", this according to our shopping sources.

It's the same frozen fish fillets that Gorton's is known for, but covered in "Real Potato Breading".

The "Great Taste of Potato Chips" perhaps makes a novel way to sell frozen fish fillets. Instead of finding new flavors for potato chips, Gorton's is doing the opposite, making food taste like potato chips.

I'm sure tortilla chips and Cheetos are not too far behind.

Canned Sardines as a Health Food

Season Imported Sardine FilletsCanned sardines play an important role in maintaining a healthy, balanced diet.

That's what RAB Food Group, LLC says on their website, about their line of canned sardines. The company recently launched a new form, sardine fillets, designed to appeal to folks who can't stand seeing fish heads and fins.

But perhaps my biggest reason for blogging this is the health statement printed on the box:

Natural Source of Omega-3's and Protein

Perhaps it's a sign of the times that canned sardines are now good for your heart. Also, the mention of protein is obviously there to appeal to carb-conscious dieters.

So is the canned sardine industry now on the brink of financial success in the health food market? Well, the fact that this company is putting out fillets instead of whole sardines, shows their committment to broaden public appeal.

I can just see Oprah Winfrey with her head tilted back, slurping down a six-inch long sardine and saying, "Wow, I just lost another 5 pounds!"

Delmor Shredded Squid

Delmor Shredded SquidBridgetown Foods, which markets food products in Russia, is offering a line of shredded squid.

Funny, when I first saw the words, "Delmor Shredded Squid", the first thing that came to my mind is pouring milk over these things and eating breakfast. But it's basically squid jerky.

The company stresses its health benefits, being rich in protein and iodine. They also claim its produced from "ecologically pure meat of Pacific squid", which I guess means they fish them out of the ocean?

You can get them in four flavors: salty, smoked, ketchup and paprika.
