Claim Jumper Chocolate Motherlode Cake

Few desserts are as impressive as seeing a "piece" of Claim Jumper's Chocolate Motherlode Cake delivered to your table.

The thing is massive.

But very delicious.

So, is a frozen version just as good as the one in an actual Claim Jumper restaurant?

I put that question to the test after the company sent me a box containing one frozen slice of the famed chocolate decadence. This box is actually available across the country at grocery stores, and is a part of a long series of Claim Jumper favorites designed for the freezer.

The instructions are pretty simple. Remove the cake from the box, and let it thaw for about 60 minutes.

While I'm not an expert on great tasting cakes, my wife is. She ate a whole slice, just as you see this picture, many years ago, for free. We were visiting a Claim Jumper restaurant, and after 20 minutes without a waitress asking taking our order, I complained to the manager. That's how I got the free Motherlode cake.

For this review, I did ask my wife to cut me off a small piece.


I'd have to say, "yes", it really does taste like a fresh piece of cake from Claim Jumper. I actually let my piece sit underneath my desk lamp, and allowed it to assume room temperature more quickly. I found it quite soft and moist.

It's just as chocolatey, and the icing is just as gooey, the little chocolate chips inside are just as sweet, and the whole thing it's just as rich.

My wife says it was absolute heaven.

Well, I'm not quite the junk food junkie that thrives on chocolate cakes. I tend to snack on beef jerky, sunflower seeds, and oatmeal cookies when my wife bakes them.

But I know that junk foodies come in all shapes and sizes, and those wanting to pull one of these baby's out of the freezers for lunch, will definitely have to be of a certain shape and size.

Sweet Potato Hoe Cakes

I wasn't aware of "hoe cakes", until I saw this Sweet Potato Hoe Cake under the "Lawdy Miss Clawdy" brand.

According to the product's page, hoe cakes are flat bread pancakes that were baked over an open fire on the blade of a hoe. They were cooked and eaten by railroad workers.

This particular brand of hoe cakes uses a cinnamon flat bread with sweet potato topping.

It also claims to be an original product of Lloyd Price. Price is the guy who owns the Lawdy Miss Clawdy brand, and he was known for his television appearances on some variety shows and dramas.

Friendly's Reese's Peanut Butter Cake

Babka Bites

Thou Shall Snack, LLC, the Seattle, WA-based maker of Jewish-style snack foods, recently launched a new line of snacks called, "Babka Bites".

Babka, which is a traditional Jewish treat, kinda like a sweet spongy yeast cake, is now offered in a convenient bite sized form in a sealed package, perfect for chomping down in mass quantities.

The company describes their new Babka Bites as "light and crispy sweet bites made with whole grains and organic ingredients". They come in two flavors, "Cinnamon" and "Dark Chocolate".

Babka Bites are free of artificial colors, additives, preservatives, trans fat and cholesterol.

Banana Twinkies Return

This is the real deal, the original Twinkie as it was first introduced has returned: Banana Twinkies.

The banana flavor, which was replaced with vanilla creme following a banana shortage in the 1940s, had only been available during special limited time offers. Overwhelming consumer demand during a recent promotion, however, prompted Twinkies' bakers to bring it back for good.

500,000 Twinkies are sold each year, so Hostess has no intention of messing with the Vanilla that has been available for generations. Hostess notes that it's an urban legend that Twinkies last forever, they really only have a shelf life of about 25 days (so don't go eating any of the original Banana Creme Twinkies).

Mrs. Freshley's Cake n' Candy Bar

Flowers Foods of Tucker, GA has a new product under their Mrs. Freshley's line of snacks, "Caramel Crunch Cake n' Candy Bar".



It's a chocolate cake with caramel filling, a chocolate coating with little crunchies on top. It comes in a 2.1oz wrapper and the company says it has a shelf-life of 45 days.

Mrs. Freshley's Snack Away Cakes

If a Twinkie happens to be your poison of choice, you might try comparing them to Mrs. Freshley's new Snack Away Cakes.

It's billed as a healthier alternative to the real mccoy, offering 140 calories per cake, as opposed to 150 calories. Not much of a change.

But it does claim to include no added sugar.

What's interesting is that the name, "Snack Away" seems to suggest that you can scarf down several of these with the comfort of knowing that you're eating something better. Better? You may as well eat a real Twinkie.

Kemps Pillsbury Ice Cream Cakes

The tag-team duo of Kemps LLC and Pillsbury continues to produce new products, including new ice cream cakes.

Pictured here is the Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Ice Cream Cake, presented in a 2 lb. 8 oz. (830g) cardboard box featuring the REAL dairy seal. It's described as layers of rich creamy ice cream smothered with generous chunks of cookie dough and chocolate chips, served on top of a chocolate cookie crunch base.

Other varieties include, Peanut Butter Cup, and Caramel Fudge Brownie.

They're manufactured by Kemps, with the Pillsbury Dough Boy getting all the props.

Banana Creme Filled Twinkies

Hostess Twinkies will once again be filled with smooth banana-Creme, the original flavor of the iconic snack cake created 76 years ago this April, but only for a limited time.

In connection with the DVD release of King Kong, Hostess is introducing limited-edition Banana Creme-Filled Twinkies, available in over 30,000 retail locations nationwide beginning March 23, 2006.

This banana-themed promotion is a nostalgic nod to the classic treat, which was made with banana Creme filling until a World War II banana shortage prompted Twinkie bakers to switch to vanilla Creme.

J. Marie Fine Cakes

Tiburon, CA-based J. Marie Fine Cakes manufacturers this new line of ready-to-eat rum cakes.

Varieties include "Lemoncello", "Chocolate Butter Rum", "Caffe Chocolat", and "Vanilla Butter Rum".

The maker claims their products represent a revival of traditional rum cakes. Thye're on a mission to bake moist cakes with consistently rich flavors, using the finest ingredients, and simple stuff like fresh creamery butter, aged vanilla bean, and the smoothest of dark rums.
