Haagen-Dazs Cranberry Blueberry Sorbet - Review

I'm having this pint of Haagen-Dazs Cranberry Blueberry Sorbet.

I've been migrating over to the sorbets lately, mostly because it's fat-free. It seems I'm still a junk food junkie, but one that's put focus on slimming down.

Anyways, last month I said I was eating a pint of Ben & Jerry's "Berried Treasure" sorbet, which is comparable to this in that theirs has Blueberry & Blackberry swrils in a lemon-sorbet base.

This Haagen-Dazs, on the other hand, still uses lemon, and as a result has the same tanginess as the Ben & Jerry's. The difference is that the cranberry & blueberry are blended into the lemon, and not swirled. The result is an even taste all throughout the pint.

The verdict?

Well. I think I prefer the Ben & Jerry's. I mean, both brands effectively have the same lemon tanginess with the berry flavors, except the Ben & Jerry's, by using swirled berries, tends to provide some flavor variation. That is. sometimes you get mostly lemon, sometimes you get mostly berries, sometimes both.

The Haagen-Dazs is still yummy, but if I had to be stuck on a tiny island in the middle of the Pacific, and could only choose between one brand, I'd go for the "Berried Treasure", and no pun intended.

Ben & Jerry's Berried Treasure Sorbet

Eating this Ben & Jerry's "Berried Treasure" sorbet right now...


Overall it's tasty.

It's basically a lemon sorbet, and a tangy one at that. But it has swirls of blueberry and blackberry that provide some fruity contrast.

However, the tangy lemon sorbet still provides the more dominant flavor.

Tastes very much like peaches. Kinda like the peaches you get from a can, in light syrup.

It's fat-free, but still with 33g of carbs, or 132g for the whole pint.

Dairy Queen Tagalongs Peanut Butter Patties Blizzard

Dairy Queen announced today the launch of a new Blizzard flavor, "Girl Scouts Tagalongs Peanut Butter Patties", and made it the Blizzard of the Month for July.

One of the most popular Girl Scout cookies, Tagalongs, also known as Peanut Butter Patties, are crispy cookies layered with peanut butter and covered with a chocolate coating. Dairy Queen breaks these into pieces and mixes it with creamy vanilla soft serve.


This marks the second year that Dairy Queen is partnering with Girl Scouts of the USA, which last year culminated with the debut of the Girl Scouts Thin Mint Cookie Blizzard, which I mentioned here on JFB.

Last summer, Dairy Queen served more than 10 million of those Thin Mint Blizzards, making it the most popular limited time Blizzard flavor ever.

Hence why DQ is riding the girl scouts for a second straight year.

The average price of the Girl Scouts Tagalongs Peanut Butter Patties Blizzard and the Thin Mint Cookie Blizzard is $3.09 for the 12 oz., $3.49 for the 16 oz. and $3.99 for the 21 oz.

Jamba Juice's New Blackberry Smoothie

Jamba Juice announced today the national rollout of a limited time only seasonal smoothie, the "Blackberry Bliss".

The new flavor is part of Jamba Juice's summer promotion, "Summer Bliss". It's made with whole fruit including blackberries, blueberries and strawberries.

With the Summer Bliss promotion, customers can earn coupons and prizes by uploading a photo of their faces to Jamba Juice's new website, and paste the photos over action scenes.

Chick-fil-A Offers New Peach Milkshake

Chick-fil-A announced today that it is adding a new peach flavor to its line of Hand-Spun Milkshakes for the summer. The Peach Milkshake will be offered as a limited-time flavor from June 1 through Aug. 22 at the chain's mall and stand-alone restaurants nationwide.

The new peach flavor is made with real peaches and is hand-spun with Chick-fil-A's "Icedream", and topped with light whipped cream and a maraschino cherry.

It's fitting enough the company come out with a peach flavored shake, being Chick-fil-A is based in Georgia, the "Peach State".

Coinciding with the Peach Milkshake rollout, Chick-fil-A will also introduce a smaller milkshake option that will remain on the menu permanently. Chick-fil-A Milkshakes will be offered in 14 oz. or 20 oz. cups and priced at $2.49 and $2.89, respectively (at most locations).

Since Chick-fil-A first introduced its line of Hand-Spun Milkshakes in May 2006, the desserts have proved to be one of the most popular products on the menu. Building upon its increasing milkshake momentum, the chain has added limited-time flavors to its milkshake menu annually. Chick-fil-A offered a Mint Cookies and Cream Milkshake in 2007, followed by a Coffee Caramel Milkshake last spring and a Peppermint Chocolate Chip Milkshake during the holidays last year.

Mollicoolz Shakers - Perfecting the Milkshake

MolliCoolz, a brand of frozen beaded ice cream, has a product line called "Shakers". It's found in the freezer aisle of grocery stores.

It's a cup filled with their pelletized ice cream beads. You pour milk into it, and then shake. You end up with a colorful, flavorful, milkshake.

Shakers are currently available in four flavors, vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, and cookies n cream.

You can find them in most grocery store chains, as well as Wal-mark Supercenters, priced around $2.00 per cup.

Dairy Queen Launches New Girl Scout Blizzard

Dairy Queen officially launched its new Blizzard flavor of the month for July, Girl Scouts Thin Mint Cookie Blizzard.

The best selling Girl Scouts cookie is now a Blizzard variety, in a cool green color, minty flavored ice cream, with chunks of Thin Mint cookies.

The company sent me a coupon for a free sample of this new Blizzard flavor, so I hopped over to my nearest DQ, and tried it out.

It tastes very much like a mint chocolate chip ice cream, except instead of chocolate chips, it just has chunks of cookies in it.


The Blizzard got its start in 1985 as a soft serve ice cream with flavoring and bits of candy. However, the Blizzard trademark has been within the company since the 1950s, representing various concepts.

In China, DQ actually sells green tea Blizzards. I wonder why they don't offer that here?

The Girl Scouts Thin Mint Blizzard are available in DQ stores right now, and will be around indefinitely.

Pinkberry - Coffee Frozen Yogurt

Pinkberry, the frozen yogurt chain that seemingly became an overnight sensation after being featured on an American Express television commercial, is now offering a new coffee frozen yogurt to celebrate its third birthday.

The new coffee variety will be accompanied by a new topping option, chestnuts.

The company says that it spent 12 months trying to make this new coffee flavor, and describes it as "a refreshing proprietary blend of premium coffee with Pinkberry's signature yogurt tang".

Pretty good idea, mixing frozen yogurt with Tang.

Pinkberry has 40 locations throughout New York and California.

It's promoted as Baby Ruth flavored ice cream with swirls of crunchy chocolate, topped with caramel and whole chocolate covered peanuts.

YoPRO - Frozen Yogurt for Body Builders

YoPRO Treats Inc. of Burlington, Ontario, recently launched a new variety of frozen yogurt called, "YoPRO".

It's marketed as a low fat, high protein, frozen yogurt, and claims to be the only one of its kind. The product's website depicts photos of sports enthusiasts, fitness gurus, and mentions its review in Maximum Fitness magazine, billing it as a fitness product in the form of frozen confection.

Do fitness fanatics really want to gain muscle mass through frozen yogurt?

What happened to the old school body builders that started their day with a glass of raw eggs? It took a "real man" to swallow something like that. How come we never had companies that sold frozen raw eggs on a popsicle?

YoPRO is currently only shipping to stores throughout Ontario, Canada. But if successful, I'm sure we'll see it here in the States. As the old saying goes, "if Canadians will eat it, then Americans will eat it."

Cold Stone Creamery Announces New Holiday Creations

Cold Stone Creamery announced this week the availability several seasonal offerings for the winter months.

Beginning Nov. 7, the infamous pumpkin ice cream will be back in stores along with dark chocolate peppermint ice cream. Each of these flavors can be made-to-order or enjoyed as Signature Creations.

The specific Signature Creations for these flavors include "Pumpkin Pie in the Sky" (pictured at right), made with pumpkin ice cream, Keebler graham cracker pie crust, caramel and whipped topping. There's also "After Dinner Mint", which combines dark chocolate peppermint ice cream with chocolate shavings, OREO cookies and marshmallow.

In keeping with Cold Stone Creamery holiday tradition, the Pumpkin Ice Cream Pie will once again be available and made with delectable pumpkin ice cream nestled in a Keebler graham cracker pie crust and decorated with dollops of cinnamon frosting and chocolate leaves.

Baskin-Robbins Lick-A-Thon

This Thursday, September 20 (tomorrow), participating Baskin-Robbins locations across the country will host in-store Lick-A-Thons to ring in the Fall season.

I wasn't sure what a "Lick-A-Thon" was, as this information came to me from Baskin-Robbins' marketing agency. So I did a Google search for "lick-a-thon" to see if they had held these events before.

Unfortunately, all I got was a bunch of porn sites.

So I called up their marketing agency and asked them.

The Lick-A-Thon is an effort to find America's fastest ice-cream licker. Participating Baskin-Robbins locations will host a Lick-A-Thon which involves licking up an Oreo Ice Cream cone the fastest. It sounds like the winning licker and his/her "lick time" will be added to a nationwide database to identify the quickest tongue in the land.

Unfortunately again, Baskin-Robbins made no effort to explain which locations are participating. According to their marketing agency, you have to look up various locations on the Baskin-Robbins website, and call them to see if they're running a Lick-A-Thon. Here's their store locator...

Bubbie's Mochi - Melon Flavors

Bubbies Homemade Ice Cream & Desserts, Inc. has always had its ardent admirers which was propelled even further last year when Oprah Winfrey featured Bubbie's Mochi on the O List.

Bubbie's already has an extensive list of flavors for their premiumly-priced Mochi (a dollop of ice cream covered in a glutinous rice skin).

They've now introduced two new classically-Asian flavors: Honeydew and Cantaloupe.

The stuff isn't cheap online at $48 for 16 pieces. It is often found in smaller packages in Whole Foods and other premium grocery stores (though not usually in all flavors). Kosher and all natural.

Breyers Ice Cream Poppers - Kisses

Breyers has introduced a new line of Ice Cream Poppers in a co-branding with Hershey's Kisses. The ice cream bites are shaped like Kisses.

They currently come in two varieties, the one shown is vanilla ice cream covered in a milk chocolate. The second is chocolate ice cream covered in milk chocolate.

The small tubs hold 8.5 fluid ounces and can easily be shared without the need for spoons or ice cream scoops.

In further brand extension with Hershey's, there are several other candy-themed varieties: Heath Ice Cream Poppers & Reese's Peanut Butter Cup Ice Cream Poppers.

Kisses are currently celebrating their 100th anniversary.

Breyers has also entered into ice cream branding deals with Goya, Mars (M&Ms and Twix) and Kraft (Oreos).

Introducing the Pickle Sickle

Here's a curious new product called the Pickle Sickle. It's a frozen treat made from pickle juice.

There is a small subset of people in this world who like to drink pickle juice, it's one of the few savory drinks out there. There are even fewer savory frozen treats (though I often eaten frozen peas or frozen corn as a snack on hot days). It might be a fun change of pace from frozen sugary juices on a stick.

Though the logo may give the impression it's an actual frozen pickle on a stick, the Pickle Sickle is packaged rather like Otter Pops. A little tube of plastic containing the pickle juice is stored at room temperature and then frozen to create the Pickle Sickle. Each portion is 2 ounces.

Caramel Giant King Cone

Good Humor is introducing a new single-serve cone in 7-11 stores around the country. Called the Caramel Giant King Cone, it features caramel and vanilla ice cream with a caramel core and topped with caramel and peanuts all in a crispy cone.

Also available in the longer-named Triple Chocolate Brownie Giant King Cone which has "epic proportions" of creamy white and dark chocolate ice cream with a milk chocolate sauce core, topped off with chocolate sauce and brownie pieces.

The cone is 4 fluid ounces and features 420 calories and 410 calories respectively. No word on what the size of the non-king cone would be.

Jack in the Box Pumpkin Shake

Last Wednesday I mentioned the Holiday Shakes being back at Jack in the Box. Among this is the Pumpkin Shake.

It was around 9:30pm last night that I got the munchies for some Jack in the Box, and while in the drive-thru, decided I had to try the Pumpkin Shake.

Jack in the Box shakes are always pretty thick, so thick you can't really suck it up with a straw. Well, at least they're this way at the Jack in the Box I go to.

They definitely have a great pumpkin-pie like taste. The texture is very smooth and very creamy, and if you drink (or eat) it right away, it's quite cold.

I didn't find this to be extra sweet at all. It's almost like typical ice cream, but as an old-school milk shake.

I can't help comparing this to a Pumpkin Shake I had at Ruby's Diner a couple of weeks ago. The one at Ruby's also had a definite pumpkin taste, but I'd have to say Jack in the Box's is more smooth.

Pumpkin seems to make great flavored shakes. It's too bad you can't get them all year 'round. Now that they're here, I recommend getting one!

Holiday Shakes Are Back at Jack in the Box

Jack in the Box announced today that it's holiday shakes are back on the menu.

The Pumpkin Pie Shake and the Egg Nog Shake are now on the menu for a price of $2.49 per 16oz, or $2.99 per 24oz.

Better yet, if you buy one they'll give you a free Christmas Antenna Ball. Well, they actually call it a "Holiday" Antenna Ball, but I prefer Christmas instead.
