At close up, they're not really maggots, but some kind of palatable confection made to resemble squirmy crawlies.

Speaking of donuts with unexpected ingredients, I was in a Mister Donut in Tokyo last year, and ordered what I guessed was some sort of apple cinnamon donut, only to find out that it was filled with cold, thick, congealed brown curry sauce. With little chunks of... something, maybe carrots, maybe meat, who knows. Yum.
