Midwest Airlines Chocolate Chip Cookies

Midwest Airlines is now offering its famous chocolate chip cookies for retail in the form of ready-to-bake cookie dough.


The company, which flies it's jetliners across the heartland of America, offers its passengers free chocolate chip cookies, which are baked during the flight. The cookies are very popular with passengers, and demands for the company's secret recipe have escalated. Instead, Midwest Airlines is offering the next best thing, by selling its cookie dough.

The cookie dough is only available at Milwaukee-area, Balistreri-owned and -operated Sendik's Food Markets. If you don't happen to live within driving distance to Milwaukee, well hopefully Midwest Airlines will distribute them to other stores.

Midwest Airlines is based in Milwaukee, which kinda explains that.

The chocolate chip cookie is a pretty serious issue with Midwest Airlines, check out their website, "Save the Cookie".

I'm not for certain, but I think Midwest Airlines may be the first air carrier to launch its food for retail.

Real Buffalo Peanuts

Just as the name implies, "Real Buffalo Peanuts" are peanuts made from real Buffaloes.

Ok, no, they're peanuts seasoned with "Buffalo Wing" spices. But, when I saw the name "Real Buffalo Peanuts" the first thing that entered my mind were Rocky Mountain Oysters, or some kind of new derivative from another part of the country.

The spicy snack food is the creation of Nuts Are Good! Inc. of Warren, Michigan.

They've been around for over a year now.

Burger King Homestyle Melts

The Burger King restaurant chain, also known as the second-biggest burger chain, announced today the launch of its new line of "Homestyle Melts" sandwiches.


Described as "sandwiches just like mom used to make", the line includes varieties...

• Honey Butter Homestyle Melt - a breakfast variety featuring sausage, egg, honey-butter sauce, and melted American cheese on butter-flavored sourdough bread, and


• Bacon Double Homestyle Melt - boasts four half-slices of crispy bacon, three slices of melted Swiss cheese and two hamburger patties smothered in a creamy garlic cheese sauce all between buttery flavored sourdough bread.

The sandwiches are available now, for a limited time.

To market the new Homestyle Melts, a series of television spots include three vignettes that feature four moms who are angry at the King for encroaching on their turf by offering melted sandwiches served on soft buttery bread. In these days, with new energy drinks coming out every day, you need some kind of bold marketing angle, and a name like "Pissed Off" is great way to get mentioned on some sorry blogs.

Aside from boasting an all natural formula, Pissed Off is said to decrease fatigue and boost immunity. The maker claims to have thrown in a trio of botanical extracts from Eastern Europe, and we all know that Eastern Europe is THE place for botanical extracts.

Krispy Kreme Maggot Sprinkles

Every Halloween, the Krispy Kreme chain brings out its pumpkin-shaped doughnuts with orange glaze.

But apparently in Hong Kong, the company has adapted its offerings of goulish fried dough to a more tolerant clientele, including a chocolate glazed doughnut with maggot sprinkles.


At close up, they're not really maggots, but some kind of palatable confection made to resemble squirmy crawlies.

That's just what I need. How many times have I bitten into a creme-filled doughnut wondering if I might find an unexpected ingredient?

Ruth's Hemp Tortilla Chips

Ruth's Hemp Foods, Inc. of Toronto, ON, has expanded their offering of hemp-laden foods to tortilla chips.

They're made with organic corn and hemp, and carry the Organic stamp of approval. Ruth's claim that they have a "great texture and flavor".

Eating Right Potato Crisps

You have to question a brand name called "Eating Right" when used with snack foods.

Of course, these aren't potato chips, they're "potato crisps", but since when does that change anything?

Look Ma! I'm Eating Right! It's ok now!

The "Eating Right" label is a brand name of Safeway grocery stores. They're supposed to be low in fat so that you can inhale two bags of crisps and still the get the same fat absorbtion as a single bag of chips.

Famous Dave's Beef Jerky

Famous Dave's, well known for his line of BBQ sauces and marinades, has apparently gotten into the beef jerky business.

The Eden Prarie, MN-based manufacturer offers up three varieties...

• Original Recipe - seasoned with Famous Dave's steak and burger seasoning


• Apricot and Bourbon - which I assume is based on the marinade of the same name (describned as a blend of sweet apricots with chipotle peppers for heat and finished with a hint of bourbon for an amazing flavor experience)


• Pork Jerky Seasoned with Rib Rub - which is probably like eating tough pork ribs, but without the bones

Defintely going to have to try the Pork Jerky and the Apricot and Bourbon.

Hannah Montana Candy Line

Apparently Imaginings 3 of Niles, IL is planning to launch a line of candy under the "Hannah Montana" brand name.

Among the offerings are these "Glamour Guitar Lollipops" which includes one sour, and one sweet. There are also sweet & sour "Concert Candy Sour Gummies" in shapes of guitars and microphones, as well as the "Disco Ball Pop", and the "Picture Ring Lollipops", and gum roll.

The line is expected to retail in 2008.

Stix in the Mud

Stix in the Mud is the flagship product of Los Angeles, CA-based Funley's Delicious.

They describe them as a "sweet and salty clusters of savory cookie bits smothered in chocolate". Imagine tiny crunchy cookie bits, drowned in balls of chocolate, similar to like a Nestle Crunch, but in ball form.

The Original variety is actually made with a mixture of milk chocolate and dark chocolate. The Peanut Butter and Caramel varieties are just milk chocolate.

The product's website says the creator of Stix in the Mud got the idea after walking into a puddle of mud and dropping a load of sticks. Doubt that it's true, but it works.

I love candy like this that stretches the boundaries of what's socially acceptable.

You open up the incision in this guy's belly, and extract the parasites from his gut with the included tweezers. Then you put the blood-suckers into your mouth, and chew the gummy goodness.

And you can only get away with this if it's candy. Imagine a baby doll in which kids open up an incision in its belly, and pull out a 2-foot long tapeworm! Parents would be livid. But candy, no problem!

White Trash Snacking

I discovered something from Nancy's Candy Co of Meadows of Dan, Virginia called, "White Trash".

It's described as a blend of cereal, peanut butter, chocolate, and powdered sugar.

Remember those old Reese's Peanut Buter Cup commercials, where a guy carrying chocolate bumps into a guy carrying peanut butter? Well, in this case there would have been a third guy carrying cereal, and all three of them falling into a giant vat of powdered sugar.

Beef Sausage Snack Bites

These bite-sized beef sausage snacks are quickly becoming my blog meat of choice.

For years, I've relied mainly on beef jerky, but I really like these sausage snacks. I guess it's because it offers my palate a change to my snacking habits. I think another reason why these are so good is because they're cold right out of the refigerator, whereas jerky is room temperature.

Like beef jerky, they're low in carbohydrates, almost nil in fact. But these are much higher in fat, whereas jerky is low in fat and carbs.

The nutrition facts says there are 8 servings in one bag, and each serving contains 9g of fat. I'll eat an entire bag in one day.

But most of time, I'm able to offset some of the fat intake by popping 8-10 of these bite-sized morsels to my dogs, who wait patiently in my office for a handout.

Once used largely for moist-towelettes, this type of resealable packaging is making its way into the snack food industry. It'll probably work out great for junk stuff like Oreos that don't have to be sealed and refrigerated.

Sushi Gummis

I don't know where to begin.

These aren't the first gummi product to take advantage of the popularity of sushi but certainly the first to combine space invaders with Japanese cuisine in a candy.

This product appears to be called Enjoy! Sushi and is manufactured & distributed by Brand New Products, LLC (of Chicago).

The little gummis are shaped perhaps like fish or something but the package says (starting in the upper left and going clockwise):

Pork Rinds - Pig Skins

Pork rinds, otherwise known as "pig skins" by my mother, and "chicharones" by my Mexican friends, is a misunderstood form of junk food Americana.

I've always found it to be more like a "real man's" version of rice cakes, but with a greasy aftertaste. My wife detests it, mainly because she detests anything she has yet to try. I've run into other people who think it's borderline psychotic to eat pig skin. I've never understood this.

My mom liked to sprinkle chili powder on her pig skins, and my Mexican friends always dabbed them with some drops of Tapatio.

Each bag came with a variety of pig skins; some were light and fluffy, perhaps like they were meant to be. Others were harder, more compact, and more greasier. I always preferred these because they had more flavor.

When I was a kid, they always came in plain flavor. These days, you can get them pre-sprinkled with chili-powder, or with nacho-cheese flavor, and sugar-cinnamon.

I knew people who ate them the same way other folks would eat crackers, by stacking other stuff on 'em. They'd take a light and fluffy piece of pork rind, and place pieces of lunch meat, cheese, chip dip, or pepperonis.

I liked to prepare a bowl of chili-and-cheese, by mixing a can of chili with a chunk of Velveeta, or that nacho cheese sauce, adding a few drops of Tabasco, and microwaving it. Then you dunk your pork rind into it, scoop out a big helping of chili-cheese, and eat it. Then you wash it down with a beer.

Sabritas is a brand name of Frito-Lay, marketed towards the hispanic community, with products available in the USA in hispanic food stores.
