While not exactly junk food, I thought I'd mention these for the novelty value.
Pronounced, "Grape-L", they're a patented process owned by Grapple Fruits, LLC of Wenatchee, WA.
They specifically use Washington Extra Fancy Fuji Apples, because they absorb the grape flavor best. They simply soak the apples in concentrated grape flavor and pure water. All ingredients are USDA and FDA approved and the process has been licensed by the Washington State Department of Agriculture.
The apple takes on no additional sugars or calories, and are not genetically altered in any way.
It's largely designed as a way to get kids to eat more apples, because apples just don't taste good enough I suppose. Grapples have been around for a couple of years now, but are only now making their way into grocery stores across the country.

I've actually purchased and eaten a container of Grapples. They use gala apples, which are my favorite. They're very good, but after a few bites, they don't taste very grapey. Not worth the ~$1 per apple. Unless maybe you have kids who won't eat anything buy novelty food.
I have had these a few times. I am not a big apple eater and if I am going to eat an apple I would rather it be a Grapple. They are a little more pricey but the taste and quality make it worth it for me.

The Grapples I've seen are artificially flavored, not flavored with "grape juice extract" as you suggest. Anyway, I think this is a good item for this blog, which I always enjoy reading.
Plus I can't wait to see more artificially-flavored produce. Can banana-flavored broccoli be too far away?
I had these a year ago or so and just didn't think they were all that much to rave about. The had a subtle grape flavor, but mostly they just tasted like apple.
They had a weird slimy waxiness to them, too.

Grapples tasted amazing. I really enjoyed the taste, and the texture. This was a "grape" compromise from the great texture of an apple and the amazing flavor of a grape.
my local market un-boxed some Grapples and they got mixed with the regular Fujis; I'd eaten a few slices while working and at first the taste reminded me of the flavoring for Pepto Bismol a little. I'm not much of a grape juice drinker and avoid artificial anything. almost half an apple into it I made the connection and looked up "grape flavored apple". it does taste like artificial grape flavor with the aftertaste of apple. not a desired taste, IMO. I just wanted to be sure it wasn't GMO. not great that it's artificial grape, either. Farmers should stay with making better apples(versus "gimmicks" like this),or distributing other varieties to the market, or juices of various types.
